Lately, I’ve been exploring the idea of doing less—not in a drastic, all-or-nothing way, but by making small, mindful changes. I’ve noticed that certain habits—like reaching for sugar, relying on single-use plastics, and constantly checking my phone—have been quietly impacting my well-being and the environment. So, I’ve started experimenting with using less. And honestly, it’s beginning to feel really good.

Cutting Back on Sugar

I used to grab sugary snacks without much thought—midday treats, late-night indulgences, or a sweet drink just because. Now, I pause and ask myself why I’m craving it. Am I tired? Bored? Stressed? That brief moment of reflection often leads me to choose something else—like a piece of fruit, a walk, or a glass of water. I don’t miss the sugar highs and crashes, and my energy feels more balanced throughout the day.

Using Less Plastic

I hadn’t realized how much single-use plastic was part of my daily routine until I started paying attention. From packaging to takeout containers, it was everywhere. I’m not aiming for zero waste, but I’ve begun carrying a tote bag, using a refillable water bottle, and choosing products with less packaging. It’s a work in progress, but each small change feels like a positive step for the planet and myself.

Spending Less Time on My Phone

This one’s been the toughest. My phone is my connection to the world, my work, and my relaxation—but it’s also a source of distraction. I’ve started setting boundaries, like no phone during the first hour of my day and aiming for screen-free evenings. It’s not perfect, and I still find myself scrolling more than I’d like, but I’m beginning to feel more present and engaged in the moment.

What It’s Taught Me

None of this has been about rules or restriction. It’s about awareness. About choosing a little more intention over autopilot. Reducing sugar, plastic, and phone time hasn’t made my life smaller—it’s made it quieter, clearer, and honestly, a little more mine.

I’m not perfect at any of this—but I’m trying. And trying feels like a pretty good place to start.
